Who was the real Jesus?
Albert Einstein once said, “Learn from
yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop
questioning.” Sometimes as humans we forget that it is okay to question things
we read, see, or hear. Recently in class we watched a video that was said to
have unveiled secrets of the Bible and tell us who Jesus really was. This video
and the messages it brought forth reminded me of the Albert Einstein quote noted
above. Most of all the video got me thinking about whether or not it is okay to
trust what the Church tells me.
I believe that it is undeniable that God’s
presence is always around us and shines through in everything we do and
therefore I think that aspect of religion cannot be questioned. I think that if
you believe in God you shouldn’t have to worry about questioning whether he is
there or not, faith makes it be known that he is always there for us. God is
just there like the wind, the rain, the snow, and the sun.
The video really emphasized the idea of
questioning everything you have been taught about the history of Jesus, even
what is printed in the Bible. This concept can be very hard for some people to
grasp as most do not want to have to question their religions. The video talked
about questioning what actually really happened in Jesus’ times and if it was
recorded correctly or not. Some scholars believe that Jesus’ life was not
recorded correctly in the Bible and thus they have questioned it and discovered
secrets about what they really think
happened.
Although it may be uncomfortable for some
people to question such powerful literature like the Bible, as students and
humans we can learn a lot and grow as people if we question the world around us.
This does not mean that we should question everything we learn, but it also
doesn’t mean that we should accept everything as we learn it. There are faults
behind the writings of our textbooks, what we see on the internet, and even what
we hear on television. I’m not saying there are faults behind what is written in
the Bible and what we have been taught about Jesus, I am just saying that it is
okay to question and think about what we have been
taught.
The scholarly questioning that can be seen
in the video we watched is something that can be applied to all areas of life,
not just religious education. It is so important to not just go through life
taking everything as it is. People begin to see the joy in all things, live more
creatively and fully when they begin to question and think deeper about what is
being told to them.
